Hello again, from Beth and Dan. This is our 5th year participating in the Courage Classic and our second leading our own cycling team The Tenacious Three. Are we tired? Yes - we are truthfully exhausted. But as long as our kids and our friends' kids are fighting for their lives, we will keep fighting for better medical outcomes for all kids at Children's Hospital of Colorado.
This is so much bigger than us, our family and our fight for our kids' lives. Tenacious Three is a way for us to honor some of the other courageous kids in our lives and to give back to a place that we love dearly. When we were discussing whether we could manage participating in the event this year with our chemo schedule, Amelia said:
"We HAVE to do the Courage Classic. We HAVE to help all the other sick kids."
I dare you to say "no" to that.
Raising money for Childrens Hospital has always been very personal for us. We first got involved after our son Marshall (now age 7) had two successful life-saving heart surgeries at Children's Hospital of Colorado - one at birth and again when he was 2 years old. He continues to see his cardiologist to watch for any future interventions. Marshall is really into all sports, math, and is becoming more independent by the day. He is an awesome brother, friend, son and an all-around cool kid.
In 2017, things took an extremely terrifying turn for our family when our daughter Amelia (now age 5) was diagnosed with ALL Pre-B Leukemia. It is a form of a blood cancer with a high cure rate, but it requires 2.5 years of aggressive chemo. She is now 2 years into daily cancer treatment.
Just think for a minute about what 2.5 years is in the life of a child. She was 3.5 years old when she was diagnosed and she will be 6 years old when she ends treatment this fall. That is a long, long time.
Leukemia is a hard and long battle with asburd amounts of chemo and bloodwork. Amelia fights cancer with business-like determination. She knocks out chemo one day at a time. She did all of this while attending her first year of kindergarten, learning to read & write, and ride a pedal bike. She is an amazing, empathic, hilarious, insightful person. She is expected to finish chemo in September 2019 - fewer than 100 days away.
In 2018, our cycling team honored the courage of 8 awesome kids being treated at Children's and raised over $20K for the hospital. This year, we hope to ride for more kids and raise even more money. This year's cycling event will take place July 20th - July 22nd. Dan will be doing the hardest work riding 80 miles each day over three mountain passes. Beth and the kids will be running and elite cheer squad at the most challenging mountain passes to inspire riders to keep going. We take our work VERY seriously.
Words can’t really express how grateful we are to have the terrific care of Children's Hospital so close to our home. Not only have they saved the lives of both of our children, but they do the same for thousands of other children, many from families less fortunate than us. So please donate and use your corporate match is you have one. Any amount makes a difference and every amount is deeply appreciated. Feel free to share this, join our team (Team Tenacious Three) to fundraise or ride or join our cheer squad during the event.
Thank you for your support!
Beth, Dan, Marshall & Amelia
