Why am I doing this? My story begins with my father. He struggled with anxiety and depression; he self-medicated and became an alcoholic. I grew up ashamed and afraid. I wasn't able to talk with others about this until I was well into my 20s. Now, because of the social and emotional toll that the pandemic has caused particularly for our youth who rely on social interaction for developmental growth, I am really concerned about the long term effects. This is on top of what has been a growing epidemic of mental health struggles among our youth pre-covid. We've all been profoundly impacted by so many who struggle.
With the Courage Classic going virtual this year, I have set three challenges for myself: (1) To still ride the grueling 80 miles Classic’s day 1 Copper Triangle ride, then for day 2, ride even longer than Classic's day 2 distance to complete a total of 125 miles! (2) To climb three 14ers this summer, and (3) To mountain bike from Telluride to Moab over 7 days with only one shower - ugh!
My big picture goal is to raise awareness for mental health and BREAK THE STIGMA!
Hoping you'll support me in this much needed endeavor.
